Description: | This collection consists of registers and applications for licensing of barbers in Washington State from 1927 to 1958. These records are indexed by name only.
Between 1927 and 1955 female barbers were recorded in a separate register which has not been digitized, but is indexed and online with this collection. Indexing for this register of female barbers includes name, license year, license number, place of residence, and examination grades. From 1936 to 1955, applications were kept for men, and from 1955 to 1958 include women. These applications are digitized and online with this collection. Applications can include information about applicant's age, training, education, and experience, as well as the applicant’s photograph. Prior to 1921, the Board of Barber Examiners oversaw the professional licensing of barbers. The Department of Licensing was established to bring together the independent licensing boards for various professions, thereby assuming responsibility for barbers in 1921. |
