Governor Gregoire Signs Legislation that Positions Washington as Leader in Response to Climate Change

For Immediate Release: May 3, 2007

VANCOUVER - Governor Chris Gregoire today signed into law a measure that is another step that demonstrates Washington is a leader in responding to climate change. It sets goals for reducing emissions and growing jobs, sets an emissions performance standard for new power plants and complements the goals in Governor Gregoires climate change executive order, 07-02, issued February 7, 2007.

This bill is a testament to the unique, broad-based coalition that came together utilities and environmentalists, faith communities and business leaders in support of taking action, said Governor Gregoire. Today, we are saying that, here, in this Washington, no more delay, no more doubt, no more excuses. Today, together, we take action.

Actions outlined in the bill commit the state to achieving the goals of the Governor's Climate Change Challenge. The bill establishes an emissions performance standard for electric generation facilities in Washington, committing to low emissions resources that can meet our states future needs. It establishes state goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sets a goal for creating new jobs in the clean energy sector.

Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6001, sponsored by Sen. Craig Pridemore (D-Vancouver), passed the Senate with 37 votes and passed the House with 84 votes. Governor Gregoire issued a partial veto on Section 6. The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the Legislative session.
