Notes from transcriber Maggie Rail, Jan 28, 2000, Last edited Mar 08, 2011: “St Francis Regis Mission Cemetery is sometimes called the Ward cemetery. It is located east of Kettle Falls about 2 miles and was part of the former Jesuit Mission. Ward was a small settlement at St. Francis Regis Mission in northwest Stevens County, named for Thomas Ward, an early settler.” “I compared my work with the transcriptions of Ann and Sam McCrea found in the NEWash Genealogical book #3, "Rural Area Cemeteries of Stevens County, WA." Much thanks to this work, most headstones are gone now.” “One comment from their work, "In earlier times 'The Fathers' had sheep that grazed in the cemetery, knocking over headstones and destroying markers, making it impossible to identify where graves are located." “Another source of information was from the EWGS 1976 edition of Stevens County Tombstone inscriptions copied by Belva Pederson May 27, 1975.” “Aug 14, 2000, Vicki Morris and I visited this cemetery. It has been let go to weeds so badly that the sheep grazing might be a good idea. When finished walking it we both had need to clean our shoes and socks. Transcribed and compiled by Maggie Rail ©1999, updated Sep 01, 2000.” |
