Introduction |
The Chattaroy Cemetery index lists individuals interred at this cemetery in Spokane County, Washington. Death dates listed range from 1888-2014. Index information about an individual may include name, birth date, death date, and names of family members. Index data was compiled by Maggie Rail, a member of the Washington State Cemetery Association who has transcribed over 400 cemeteries since 1993.
Chattaroy cemetery is located alongside Cowgill Road, 1/2 mile south and 1/2 mile east of Chattaroy, Wash., in the NW Quarter of SW Quarter of Section 35, Twp 28 N, Range 43 E. This index is in English. This index is open for research. Abbreviation used in this index: CG=Coast Guard USA=US Army USAF=US Air Force USN=US Navy USMC=US Marine Corps IDA=Idaho OR=Oregon WA=Washington b.=born d.=died b/o=baby of c/o=child of d/o=daughter of h/o=husband of m/o=mother of s/o=son of FH=Funeral Home yr=year m=month d=days BRB=Brown Record Book BLRB=Black Record Book s/w=stone with w/o=wife of Notes from transcriber Maggie Rail, Jun 02, 2004, Updated Mar 19, 2014: “The present cemetery was established in 1894. The books show that burials were made as early as 1888. This apparent contradiction comes because there was a previous cemetery and most of the bodies in the former cemetery, which has been abandoned, were moved to the present cemetery.” “On Wednesday, Jul 24, 2002, this cemetery was hit by vandals. The devastation these vandals caused was unreal. They totally destroyed a remarkable number of headstones, it appeared they used some machine to simply got in and destroy.” “There are no known records available for the previous cemetery. The organization meeting of the Association was held on Jul 07, 1894 in Chattaroy. A resolution was passed to purchase two and one half acres in the area described above, from the Northern Pacific Railway Co., for use as the 'Chattaroy Cemetery'.” “Transcribed from my readings of available headstones in August 1998 combined with Sexton records of June 1959 found in, Vol. 1 of "Rural Spokane Cemeteries" Pub. 1961. Some records conflicted. I tried to make them as accurate as possible. This perhaps is because there was more than one record book kept, down through the years. Even these differ on occasion. When it was the headstone reading I went with that. I made a note if I could not decide. For information on Eastern Washington Genealogical Society publications, including the one mentioned above, contact the EWGS at PO Box 1826 Spokane WA 99210-1826.” “For the sake of space I used abbreviations, transposing all dates to numbers (month, day & year) and in the case of misspelling on the cause of death, I left what was written.” “The cemetery is divided into four sections; A, B, C and D. Each section is composed of lots, numbered from 1 upwards. I do not have the location for all, but list those I found record of. Lot is listed first, then section letter. For those available I listed place of death. I was told by the current Sexton there were County Poor farm burials, with no known records of names and where they are in the cemetery.” Transcribed and compiled from when I walked the cemetery Aug 15, 1998, then again in July of 2001 and Nov 2007, with additions as found. I rewalked this cemetery on Sep 14, 2009, using a digital camera. |
