Agency History: | John T. Labbe was born in Portland in 1911, and worked as an independent logger with various mills and contractors in northwestern Oregon. His experience in logging and interest in railroads led him to become a historian on these topics. He wrote or co-wrote several books, including “Logging to the Salt Chuck: over 100 years of railroad logging in Mason County” with Peter Replinger in 1989, distributed by Oso Publishing Company.
Labbe collected images of logging and railroads in the Pacific Northwest with the goal of making them publicly accessible. He gave this collection to David Rygmyr of Oso Publishing Company in the 1990s. Glenn Comstock agreed to digitize and index the collection, and later received the images. Glenn Comstock donated the collection, including his indexing and digitized images, to the Washington State Archives. |
