Agency History: | The Washington State Patrol was created as the Division of Highway Patrol under the Department of Efficiency, in 1921. It gained separate agency status in 1933 and was re-designated the Washington State Patrol. The Patrol now consists of a headquarters unit, district offices, and a number of detachments. The State Patrol has full police powers, and operates a statewide communications network, a training facility, and state weighing stations. It maintains accident records, performs intelligence activities, and is responsible for the safety of the Governor and also the security of the Legislature when in session. Prior to 1965 the Patrol also tested and issued automobile operator's licenses. This function was subsequently transferred to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The Patrol also operates a criminal identification system, a drug control program, and operates the Capitol Patrol for the Capitol Campus in Olympia. The Chief of the Washington State Patrol is a member of the State Commission on Equipment, the Washington Law Enforcement Officers Training Commission, the Reciprocity Commission, and the State Traffic Safety Council. |
