Agency History: | Mason County was created in 1854 from a portion of Thurston County by the Washington Territorial Legislature. Originally called Sawamish County, it became Mason County in 1864, named for Charles Mason, Washington's first Secretary of State. The county seat is Shelton.
The Assessor is responsible for the calculation of property tax levies necessary to raise revenues for government services. The other prime responsibility of the Assessor is to determine the value of all taxable real and personal property in the county for the purpose of establishing the tax liabilities of property owners in the various taxing districts. The assessed value of property and the amount and levy required for government are used to calculate the amount due from each taxpayer. A taxpayer who disagrees with property value determinations has a right to appeal the decision to the County Board of Equalization. The Assessor's Office usually maintains parcel maps and legal descriptions of tax parcels as well as other records relating to property valuation. |
