Description: | This collection includes images from Governor Dixy Lee Ray’s press office, documenting public relations work during her administration from 1977 to 1981.
Dixy Lee Ray (1914-1994) served as the 17th governor of Washington State from 1977 to 1981. She made history as only the second woman in the United States to be elected Governor without having been preceded in office by a husband. Dr. Ray earned her doctorate in marine biology at Stanford University in 1945 and taught zoology at the University of Washington for over two decades. In 1972, President Nixon nominated her to the Atomic Energy Commission, and in 1974, she was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Scientific Affairs under Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. In 1975, she announced her candidacy for the Governorship of Washington. |

Agency History: | According to the Washington State Constitution, "the supreme executive power of this state shall be vested in a governor, who shall hold his office for a term of four years, and until his successor is elected and qualified. The governor may require information in writing from the officers of the state upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices, and shall see that the laws are faithfully executed." |
