Agency History: | In 1909, the State Legislature created Commercial Waterway District #1 to "maintain and police the Duwamish River." In 1913, the District began a four-year project to straighten and dredge the meandering river, turning it into an industrial shipping canal. In 1919, the federal government took over responsibility for waterway maintenance. In 1962, the Waterway District dissolved itself and the Port of Seattle acquired all its rights and responsibilities. |
