| Agency History: | Settled by ranchers in the 1860s and 1870s, the town was named by W.R. Ammon and Howard S. Ammon after Nelson Rich, one of the early ranchers whose land was being used as the town center. The town was incorporated in 1910, but during WWII, the town was condemned in 1943 after the Manhattan Engineer District decided that Richland nearby Handford and White Bluffs would be the site of a huge plutonium and uranium production site. To accommodate workers building the Hanford facility, construction of a new Richland began. Those working at the Hanford Engineering Works settled in the new Richland. In 1958, the City of Richland was incorporated, and is located in Benton County. |
