| Description: | This collection consists of 471 photographs of military personnel, equipment, facilities, and military activities within the state from 1890 to 1975 (bulk), 1850-1985 (inclusive). Images include regimental photographs at Camp Murray, Fort Worden, Fort Lewis, Camp MacKay, the Vancouver Barracks, Camp Hightower, and at La Croix, France, photographs of the state training ship U.S.S. Vicksburg, as well as photographs of troops, soldiers, officers, parades, the medical corps, batteries, tanks, ships, airplanes, horses, camps, social functions, firing ranges, maneuvers, training activities, rifle teams, riders, the signal corps, recruiting activities, machine gunnery, and armories.

| Agency History: | The Military Department was established to protect Washington citizens, and to participate in national defense as necessary. In 1854, the Territorial Legislature first created a Territorial Militia. After Washington became a state, this militia became the National Guard, which is organized, equipped, and federally recognized under the United States National Defense Act. |
