Introduction |
This database is an index to the Odd Fellows Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum listings from 1870 to mid May 2007. The information is based on inernment and internment registers, ledgers, transmittals and invoices. The index will be periodically updated to include additional names. Index information includes XX for companion marker and O for no marker.
There are 9338 names listed. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) was organized in Baltimore, Maryland on April 26, 1819, by Thomas Wildey and four other Odd Fellows from England. When the IOOF was founded, four cornerstones were laid upon which to build; to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphans. The emblem of the IOOF are three links of chain, representing Friendship, Love and Truth. In the early days, anyone lending a helping hand to those in need or those less fortunate, was considered rather “odd.” Most likely the name originated in 18th century England. At that time it was unheard of that common men would organize a mutual aid fraternity. Because of their work to “bury the dead,” the name "odd fellows" was given to them. On September 29, 1869, the Olympia Odd Fellows Lodge approved the purchase of an existing twenty-acre cemetery. Since that time our cemetery has further developed with construction of two mausoleums and 17-acres of plotted grave sites. The Olympia IOOF Memorial Park is open to all, not just Odd Fellow members. Many of the deceased were instrumental in the history of Tumwater, Olympia, Lacey and Thurston County. As you peruse the file many local place names can be attached to those buried here. |
