Agency History: | Named after President Franklin Pierce, the Oregon Territorial Legislature organized Pierce County from a portion of Thurston County in 1852. Pierce County is located in the west central portion of the state, just south of King County. The county seat was initially chosen to be at Steilacoom. Steilacoom was chosen not only for being the location of the first U.S. Military Base on the Puget Sound, but was also the only town in Washington with a jail. Tacoma became the county seat in 1880, and this county seat holder is now the largest city in Pierce County and the third largest city in Washington. Pierce County is home to Mount Rainier, the highest mountain in the State of Washington. |
