Gov. Locke's statement on Senate passage of 2002 supplemental budget
"I'm very encouraged by today's vote by the state
Senate to approve a balanced 2002 supplemental budget. This is a solid budget that does not rely on a general tax increase and makes hard choices while maintaining delivery of core state services.
"Today's vote in the state Senate and last night's vote by the state
House of Representatives Appropriations Committee brings us closer to reconciling differences to achieve an acceptable approach that leads to adjournment.
"I am committed to work with negotiators from the
Legislature to reach a compromise on the budget -- a budget that will lay a solid foundation for the next biennium as the state's economy recovers after being damaged by the events of September 11 and the recession.
"Time is running short. I hope the state House of Representatives will take quick action on the supplemental budget.
"I want to thank
Senator Lisa Brown for her leadership in writing and passing this budget."
