A new chapter began at the WSDOT last week when David Moseley took the helm of the Washington state ferry system. And I couldn't be happier.

David represents for me a major step forward in our strategy to turn around the ferry system. We are streamlining the organization and focusing on accountability. We are creating a fleet preservation and maintenance program that sets the standard for industry best practices. We are developing a vessel replacement plan that replaces vessels within their 60-year life span. And we are working with Gov. Gregoire and the Legislature on developing a long-term sustainable funding plan.

But most of all, we're building new boats. The first new Washington state ferry built since 1999 will be in service by late spring 2009. In all, we have six new vessels funded and in the pipeline for construction.

It's a good plan forward. Now we have a good leader to steer the ship.
