With more than 40 Puget Sound species at risk, shellfish beds shut down and beaches closed off to swimmers, we need to take immediate steps to restore Puget Sound. I congratulate the Puget Sound Partnership, which recently finalized its action agenda to guide us as we make strategic decisions on the cleanup of the Sound.

Recent headlines about disappearing orcas and the alarming level of toxic chemicals polluting the Sound confirm that inaction is not an option. The Sound’s health is key not only to our quality of life, but to our economy. At a critical time, this action agenda will result in the creation of hundreds, if not thousands, of green collar jobs throughout the region. The agenda will also help maintain strong tourism, seafood and boating industries.

While we now have a science-based plan in place, as well as cooperation among local, state and federal partners, it will still take considerable work to restore our waters. Government alone cannot save this centerpiece of our economy and our quality of life. Personal responsibility, personal decisions and personal behaviors of the Washingtonians who live in the region will ultimately decide the fate of Puget Sound.

I look forward to continued work with the Partnership as we move forward to educate our communities and use the action agenda. I know that with everyone working together, we can maintain a robust economy and a thriving, beautiful natural resource for many generations to come.
