As we head into 2009, my family and I wish you and yours a wonderful new year.

The last year has been full of success. Weve ensured thousands of additional children receive health insurance, weve fixed hundreds of miles of roads across the state and weve made significant progress developing a green-economy. This is a time to celebrate Washingtons greatness and the incredible spirit of our people.

While I expect similar success in 2009, we cant ignore the significant financial challenges we are facing. Even in challenging times, we Washingtonians are known for our spirit of innovation and courage. From our rolling wheat fields and lush orchards to our high-tech cities and rural communities, we have created a quality of life second to none.

Washingtonians are also known for their compassion. During this time of sacrifice, I encourage all who can to help our neighbors in need. Food banks are in need of your cash donations, community shelters need blankets and clothing, and if you cant give financially, please consider donating your time to a nearby charity. This is the time to come togetherneighbor to neighboras we head into the new year.

In partnership with you, and in a spirit of hope, determination and generosity, we will emerge stronger than ever. Lets make 2009 a year to celebrate. Lets celebrate how far weve come, and our bright future ahead—in One Washington.
