Additional high-protein food is now being distributed to food banks throughout Washington, thanks to almost $2 million of extra funding provided by the federal Recovery Act. The supplies include frozen turkey breast, eggs and cheese that will go to more than 300,000 people.

The Department of General Administration manages the Emergency Food Assistance Program in Washington. It works with food banks across the state year-round to get supplies to dining tables for those who need it most.

The need is growing. The Emergency Food Assistance Program is experiencing nearly a 20 percent growth in demand, brought on by the current severe economic conditions. Many of the people who need help are the elderly, individuals on fixed incomes, workers earning low wages, children and those who have lost their jobs.

The food banks can always use your help. Cash donations are best, and volunteers are always welcome. Governor Gregoire notes the kindness and generosity of Washington residents. More than ever, those traits are needed now by food banks in our state.

If you can donate money or time, please contact your local food bank. You can find the details at www.cted.wa.gov/maps/

Please contribute if you can. A few dollars or just a few hours go a long way toward helping fellow residents who need some help at this time.
