The recession has been tough on Washington businesses. The Department of Revenue’s tax amnesty period is giving them a fresh start by waiving penalties and interest on certain unpaid taxes.

Through April 30, businesses that have struggled in this tough economy and fallen behind on these specified taxes can pay what they owe, and avoid penalties and interest. So far, more than 5,000 businesses have applied for amnesty, paid $12.6 million in back taxes and saved $4.3 million in penalties and interest that otherwise would have been due. Not only does this help businesses, amnesty helps Washingtonians by generating tax revenue that can be used for funding essential state services.

Businesses that want to take advantage of this first-ever amnesty need to act soon. The application deadline is April 18, and all agreed-upon back taxes must be paid by April 30. Information on the program, including the application form, can be found at www.PayMyTax.org.
