Gov. Gregoire to sign first-in-nation

Gov. Christine Gregoire will sign the �high performance green buildings� bill at Washington Middle School in Olympia at 9 a.m. Friday, April 8. The bill, ESSB 5509, sets new construction standards for state and school district buildings that will reduce water and energy use. It is the first such law in the nation.

She also will sign three other bills:

  • Senate Bill 5148, repealing the crime of slander of a woman

  • Senate Bill 5356, relating to alignment of State Route 290 in Eastern Washington

  • Senate Bill 5433, relating to membership of the Commission on Judicial Conduct

WHERE
Washington Middle School, 3100 Cain Road, Olympia. A project to remodel the school was a pilot study to evaluate sustainable, high-performance school design strategies incorporated into the bill.

Directions to Washington Middle School: Use Exit 105 and stay to the right. As you complete the half-circle off-ramp, move to the left lane. At the stop sign at Henderson Boulevard, turn left. Continue on Henderson Boulevard into an inclined, wooded area. As you reach the top of the hill, the road will curve to the right, with a flashing yellow signal straight ahead. Use the left-turn lane to turn onto Eskridge. Proceed on Eskridge to the stop sign at Cain Road. Turn right onto Cain Road and proceed approximately three blocks, at which time you will see a low-level concrete sign that reads, "Washington Middle School." Turn left into the drive that will take you to the school parking lot.
