Gov. Gregoire denounces Bush decision to lift ban on offshore drilling

OLYMPIA � Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued the following statement on the Bush administration�s decision to lift the executive ban on offshore drilling:

�I maintain the long-held position shared by Governors Schwarzenegger and Kulongoski that offshore drilling is detrimental to our environment and will not relieve the energy shortfalls in the short term.

�The Bush administration should be looking at real solutions to our dependence on oil that could include offering investments in alternative and green technologies and public transportation initiatives that would help now, instead of proposing ideas that would ruin our coastlines.

�I urge Congress to maintain the ban on off shore drilling and heed our request to not rely on traditional energy sources. It is time to support and seek out alternative energy sources."
